When Commercial Free Radio Isn’t – The Dallas Experiment

Driving my kid to school today, I was shocked by the absence of DJ banter while listening to 92.5 (KZPS). The station is owned by Clear Channel so I figured they were testing the waters with something new.

Sure enough, at the end of the song, an even-toned voice said that the hour of “LoneStar 92.5″ was sponsored by Southwest Airlines. Checked it out on the Internet at the office and confirmed the format change.

It will be interesting to see how well this fares. Looks like Clear Channel is going to do sponsor product placement in this format…an audio version of what one sees done in the movies all the time. According to Andrew Adam Newman in a NYTimes.com article, the limited DJ talk will be promotional plugs conversational style for the corporate sponsors (presently AT&T, Coors, Guitar Center, and Southwest Airlines).

Although I wish this new venture the best, one has to wonder if technology is surpassing broadcast radio. Even those drivers who don’t listen to XM/Sirius are starting to carry commercial-free music libraries to listen to on automobile mp3 players.

Bogus Awards Don’t Help Your Business Or Your Website

The Press Club of Dallas is involved in a mini-scandal involving alleged rigging of its 2006 Katie Awards. The public is already skeptical. Don’t make your prospects think you’re not trustworthy by bolstering your “credibility” with fake awards.

Too often, one reads advertisements or views websites that contain trophy and ribbon logos with words like “Voted Best Widget 2007″ and “Top 10 Website.” If a legitimate third party actually bestowed that honor on your business or website without you paying compensation for it, then by all means use the award to market your business. If money changed hands or something else shady led to your being the recipient of the award, don’t jeopardize your reputation for honesty and integrity. It only takes one prospect or client to discover what really happened. The risk isn’t worth the reward…plus you’ll sleep better at night.

FTC Spam Summit

There are few things more useless than a federal government meeting but that won’t stop the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) from having them.

In July, the FTC is hosting a 2-day anti-spam summit. If you’re interested in being a panelist, you can contact the FTC by clicking this link. Let the FTC know your expertise and provide complete contact information in your e-mail.

As a practical matter, there won’t be a dent in spam until e-mail becomes fee-based on a pay-per-message basis. Third World spammers will continue to thumb their nose at U.S. regulatory agencies unless there is a monetary cost associated with messages sent.
