As an Internet lawyer and entrepreneur, I was saddened to learn that direct response marketing and copywriting guru Gary Halbert has apparently passed away.
If you haven’t already done so, take a look at the archives of some of Halbert’s work online.
Halbert was a genius who greatly contributed to effective marketing.
More details can be found at Michel Fortin’s Copywriters Board in a post by John Reese. Here’s the link.
In his final years, Halbert gained a healthy respect for lawyers after some brushes with the law. Telling others that “civilians shouldn’t talk with the military,” Halbert advised having your lawyer handle communications with numerous government officials (IRS, postal inspectors, etc.).
One of my regrets is not meeting Halbert in person. As an Internet lawyer, I found his work and history fascinating. The best alternative has been to be personally coached by direct response expert Craig Garber who used to work for Halbert.
Rest in peace. Gone but not forgotten.

If there is one tribute to Gary Halbert that should be read, it is this one by his friend John Carlton.
Halbert was indeed one of the giants that many of us direct response marketers bowed down to. And I agree… John Carlton is a pretty good one too, and to have him write about Gary must have been a great honor to both men. Gary, a troubled-soul for much of his recent life – may he rest in piece.
